June 28, 2003 - 4th Alarm - 1050 Ossington Ave.
June 28, 2003 - 7:08pm - South Command
Following a malfunction in this 4-unit transformer station, an explosion and fire ripped through one unit and extended to a second. Lurid orange flames towered over the neighbourhood as TFS crews set about saving the remaining transformers and neighbouring exposures. After TPS had rapidly evacuated the houses and factory immediately adjacent, 2 ladder pipes, 2 deck guns and several big lines were used to control the fire and keep it to the two units. Over 4,000 hydro customers lost power, many for the entire night. The loss is $1,000,000. This followed a spectacular transformer fire in a much larger sub-station in Burlington earlier in the week and came amid concerns about power availability during the summer’s first hot spell.
