October 30, 2009 - 4th Alarm - 3 Chedington Pl.
October 30, 2009 - 3:52pm - North Command - "A" Shift
This challenging outbreak took place in a large mansion located next to Bayview Ave., just up from the Glendon College entrance. Now owned by a condo development, the 3-storey brick building, built in the 1940's, was used for functions and offices and was unoccupied when an alarm was received just as rush hour was beginning. Responding crews found heavy smoke conditions and commenced an attack on the upper floors. Ventilating the roof was stymied by the slates and the blaze quickly progressed, forcing an exterior attack when the 2nd floor became unstable. A131 was set up on the exposure 2 side, and T114 set up to attack from the front. Getting enough water proved difficult and a three pump relay was used to supply the tower. As master streams and big lines were used, the fire burned through the roof and top floor, as well as causing heavy damage to the 2nd. It took hours to knock down the flames and much of the upper portions collapsed. Overhaul lasted into the next day and the cause is still under investigation. Damage was listed as $1 million although the building was worth several times that when occupied.
