October 31, 2009 - 3rd Alarm - 1079 Bathurst St.
October 31, 2009 - 5:23am - South Command - "A" Shift
Starting in a rear bedroom in this 2-storey brick commercial building, flames began eating their way through ceiling spaces and into the roof. A tenant ran through the hallway arousing other occupants while a passer-by called 911 and assisted people to the street. The original alerter was among them but apparently returned for her cat. Arriving crews immediately mounted a search of the four upper floor apartments, and then checked the crowd again. With no sign of the 50-year old woman, another search was done before heavy fire conditions in the roof and rear units forced an exterior attack. Streams were deployed from T331 and neighbouring roofs and the roof collapsed. Several lines were also deployed from the street and rear yard as flames gutted the second floor. After a couple of hours the smokey blaze was knocked down, but it was late morning by the time the blaze was out. A children's centre on the ground floor was also affected, as were both exposures, and structural damage was so severe that emergency demolition was ordered. It was while the contractor was removing debris that the unfortunate woman's body was discovered on the first floor and removed by coroner's staff after police and fire investigators had finished. Damage is at least $2 million, and several occupants were treated for smoke inhalation and a number of their cats perished. The cause is unknown, but suspected to be an unattended candle.
