April 3, 2010 - 5th Alarm - 143 Lisgar St.
April 3, 2010 - 6:41am - West Command - "B" Shift
This fire started in the basement of a 3-storey brick apartment building and quickly spread into the walls. Originally a pair of attached 3-storey brick Victorian houses, the structure was reconfigured to add the apartment building on the front half. The renovation work made chasing the flames particularly difficult and they spread up to the roof and throughout most of both sides of the building. Eleven lines were deployed and crews had to enter through windows to the upper floors after the first floor and stairs were weakened. The blaze eventually vented through the roof and one apartment, and extensive overhaul followed. Seven firefighters were injured during the battle, four of which had to be treated in hospital. The loss exceeds $500,000, and careless smoking was the cause.
