August 4, 2010 - HazMat Level 3 - 9 Leslie St.
August 4, 2010 - 8:50pm - South Command - "D" Shift
This incident took place at the sprawling Ashbridges Bay Sewage Treatment facility on the waterfront. A large amount of sodium hypochlorite was accidentally mixed with serous chloride, producing more than 4,000L of a reactive compound that off-gasses chlorine vapour. Given the amount involved, a large response from TFS and police was made and the area, largely industrial or parkland, was evacuated while the reaction was monitored. Flights at Toronto City Centre Airport were diverted around the site for a couple of hours as well. Emissions of chlorine were minimal and crews stood by for several hours as the situation was dealt with.
