This arson attack had the makings of a major disaster when Scarborough crews were called. A couch had been placed in an elevator on the 6th floor of this 17-storey brick highrise, and set afire. Heavy smoke soon migrated up and down the shaft to infect almost every floor, trapping hundreds of residents. Firefighters had to force their way into the elevator to put out the flames while crews went floor to floor reassuring frightened occupants, and assess those in need of medical care.
