January 14, 2010 - 3rd Alarm - 777 Kipling Ave.
January 14, 2010 - 10:04pm - West Command - "A" Shift
This exceptionally difficult to reach fire started in a roof peak over the 2nd floor of the sprawling former Consumers Glass factory. As smoke spread below, workers quickly evacuated the premises as TFS commanders conferred on the best approach. The former glass factory is being converted to film studios and it is likely a cutting torch started the fire. The area, at least 60' above ground, was out of reach of aerials and the roof surface could not be used for access. P433 and S445 took lines to the area inside, but the stability of the roof was questionable and they could only get at the fire from underneath. It was decided to use master streams from above, and A423 launched a stream from a parking lot on the A side of the huge complex while A426 set up at the rear. PL432 was used for roof access to the roof. This knocked down most of the flames, and interior crews moved in to take care of the rest. This operation was quite arduous as the lines and equipment had to be carried deep into the building. Overhaul operations took several hours, and damage was $100,000.
