January 4, 2010 - 4th Alarm - 161 Wheeler Ave.
January 4, 2010 - 11:46pm - East Command - "D" Shift
Crews responding to this address in the Beach found a 2-storey frame dwelling fully involved with 15' flames impinging on both exposures - a 2.5 storey frame residence at exp. 2, and a large, 2-storey brick newly built house at exp. 4. Three residents quickly escaped from exp. 2 as flames smashed through the side windows. P227 and A226 took the front while P226 laid in with a pair of 65mm lines from the rear to attack the mass of flames. The fire had quickly burned through the siding and wood wall at exp. 2 and the fire was now blowing the opposite side windows and enveloping the whole back of the building. The other exposures fared better, but flames still entered via windows and soffits. Even as 2nd and 3rd alarm companies set up, the fire building collapsed, showering the houses to the southeast with embers. Numerous lines were deployed and relay pumping was set up from Kingston Rd. As flames began to vent from the roofs of the adjacent houses, A226 was used to knock them down. An interior attack was successful in controlling the fire that spread in exp. 4, but exp. 2 was too unstable and ground ladders were used. It took only an hour to knock down the heavy fire with the fire building now in the basement, and exp. 2 was all but destroyed. Exp. 4 was heavily damaged on the side near the fire and in the roof space, and total loss exceeds $1.5 million. No cause has been determined.
