July 4, 2010 - 5th Alarm - 15 Wallsend Dr.
July 4, 2010 - 5:22 am - East Command - "C" Shift
This industrial site in south-east Scarborough, is occupied by Henry Co., a major roofing supply company. Four large tar kettles occupy a tall extension to the main plant, and one of these malfunctioned, causing a buildup of tar which overflowed onto the burners and ignited. When TFS companies arrived, this machine was fully involved and flames were extending to kettles on each side, with clouds of black smoke boiling from every opening. C23 quickly added two more alarms and called for LDH relays and a Bronto to be set up. A213 and A231 put their master streams into operation, as did T114 when they arrived. Numerous pumpers were used to supply water to the site from Coronation Drive. An internal sprinkler system helped contain the inferno until firefighters got into action and the blaze was knocked down in just 90 minutes with $1 million in damage.
