March 28, 2010 - 2nd Alarm - 34 Thyra Ave.
March 28, 2010 - 9:13pm - East Command - "B" Shift
Late in this busy day, calls were made to 911 from the far corner of East York, where flames were working through half of a 2-storey brick and frame semi. Large amounts of collectibles crammed every corner and heavy smoke filled the dwelling, making for very difficult operations. On the secondary search, the lifeless body of the homeowner, a 61-year-old woman, was located and removed. She was pronounced on scene. The fire continued to put up a fight and it was well into the night before it was extinguished. Thankfully, the other half received minimal damage and the residents vacated safely. The loss was around $300,000, and once again careless smoking was the cause. This fire, the third fatal in 19 hours, marks the first time in Toronto history three different fires on the same day resulted in death. It was also the fifth serious multiple in just 33 hours.
