As flames raged through a 1st floor room, 13 tenants escaped this 2.5 storey Mimico rooming house, thanks to a smoke alarm. Arriving fire crews managed to grab a 62-year-old man from a rear kitchen; he was revived outside and rushed to hospital in critical condition. Unfortunately, he passed away the next day. The blaze spread through the first floor and up the rear wall of the building before it was knocked down, leaving a $750,000 loss. The fire also broke through the roof, causing a partial collapse before PL432 and crews with hand lines got the upper hand. While searching the premises, firefighters discovered the body of a 42-year-old man in a first floor room. Two women, 29 and 43 years old, were treated for smoke inhalation. The cause was careless smoking.
