September 11, 2010 - 3rd Alarm - 1021 Birchmount Rd.
September 11, 2010 - 5:30pm - East Command - "A" Shift
This stubborn blaze on the fifth floor of an 11-storey highrise featured a heavy fire load and high heat conditions. As initial crews fought their way towards the fire unit with zero visibility in the hallway, some members ran low on air and the RIT was deployed, prompting the additional alarm. Fortunately, those affected were quickly evacuated and checked over. However, several tenants had to be treated for smoke exposure and one went to hospital with smoke inhalation. Once the fire was located, it still took some time to fully extinguish it and damage estimates reached $200,000. The cause is being investigated.
