September 27, 2010 - 3rd Alarm - 2400 Midland Ave.
September 27, 2010 - 10:30pm - East Command - "C" Shift
Numerous 911 calls were received for an explosion and fire in this Scarborough industrial mall and when crews arrived, heavy smoke was rolling from a shattered unit and a man was found outside suffering serious burns. While he was attended to, R243 went in with a line, knocking down spot fire on the first floor. More fire was found in a loft above and another line stretched. Meanwhile the roof was found to be compromised and all personnel ordered off it after a couple of vent holes were made. With searches complete and most of the blaze out, an exterior attack was ordered using a ladder pipe and monitors. It was determined that the blast took place in a former picture framing business but the cause is still being established. Walls were blown into adjacent units and ceilings collapsed; smoke damage also affected several premises with the total loss exceeding $500,000. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, and then transferred to Sunnybrook's burn unit.
