September 5, 2010 - 6th Alarm - 368A College St.
September 5, 2010 - 11:11pm - South Command - "A" Shift
Heavy smoke was pushing from the basement of the big Canada Computers store located on the ground floor of a large Victorian residential/commercial block. Most of the tenants of the 16 apartments above were out and the remainder quickly exited as crews with a pair of lines attempted to corral the fire in spite of punishing heat and zero visibility. Conditions became untenable downstairs and holes were made in the floor for cellar nozzles, but as these were applied, flames were found in the walls, and the floor became unstable so firefighters were pulled out of the area. Over the next few hours, streams were applied from outside and from T333's tower, while holes were made in the roof. Much of the fire spread was concentrated in a rear extension to the store and several lines were deployed in this area until the blaze was contained. Eventually, the fire worked its way up until it was found on every floor and in the roof space. Interior crews managed the risky task of opening up the voids throughout the large building until all of the flames were chased down. It wasn't until nearly 0600 that the incident was under control and companies remained on scene for two more days putting out hot spots. Two firefighters were hospitalized with smoke inhalation, another was treated on scene. The OFM was called in due to the high loss, which will likely exceed $3 million, with $1 million of that for Canada Computers alone. The final fate of the structure is still being assessed, but damage to an identical edifice at exposure #2 was limited to smoke and water, and the same to a much smaller commercial building on the other side.
