21 District crews arrived to heavy smoke coming from a two-storey dwelling and requested a 2nd alarm. A line was stretched off R214 to attack the fire , which originated in the basement and spread up the stairwell to the upper floors. Due to the compromised stairway, the front of the building was laddered, and a second line put into operation to knock down the flames on the 2nd floor. All occupants managed to escape safely.
