January 20, 2011 - Check Call - 31-35 St.Dennis Dr.
January 20, 2011 - 5:48pm - North Command - "B" Shift
The day before the TFS was called to this 10-storey apartment building, the power failed the building and it's twin at 31 St. Dennis, and left it's tenants with no electricity, heat or elevators while the owners tried to obtain a generator. Many of the 2000 tenants who could leave did so, but several hundred residents were still in the complex when a sprinkler pipe burst, activating the alarm. Responding TFS personnel were appalled to find the premises still in darkness more than 24 hours later and, with no prospect of repair in the near future, had to commence an evacuation as there was no fire alarm system or reasonable means of egress. Additional crews were summoned and arrangements were made to move the residents to a nearby community centre while vulnerable residents were checked on and lighting placed in the stairs and hallways. Many elected to stay put in spite of the arduous conditions but more than 200 were helped from the two buildings by TFS members with several assessed by EMS personnel, and at least two removed to hospital. © GTMAA Trumpet.
