January 22, 2011 - 4th Alarm - 15 Bethridge Rd.
January 22, 2011 - 2:04pm - West Command - "D" Shift
Multiple challenges faced responding companies at this Rexdale industrial centre after a vehicle inside became involved. The large, open single-storey brick structure was located several hundred feet from the roadway and contained several concrete pump trucks and other construction vehicles, equipped with propane tanks and also large amounts of fuel. Flames had already spread to other vehicles and into the roof as crews laid in, and master streams were quickly put into service. TFS members were pulled out of the building as conditions deteriorated and then well back as several tanks exploded. Long relays were made from Bethridge requiring numerous pumpers. A441 and A411 supplied ladder pipes, and the heavy fire was knocked down, allowing interior crews to perform final extinguishment. The premises are on a flight path into Pearson Airport and planes were diverted around the fire due to the volume of smoke and possibility of tanks exploding skyward. Cold weather conditions did not help matters either, and a great deal of overhaul was needed. The initial damage was $500,000 but the loss is expected to go much higher. The cause is believed to be accidental.
