January 3, 2011 - 6th Alarm - 335 Yonge St.
January 3, 2011 - 4:05am - South Command - "B" Shift
Heavy smoke was rolling from the walled off, 3-storey brick commercial building when the first calls were made. Flames had vented from several top floor windows as P314 pulled up; the blaze spread across the entire top floor as the remaining first-alarm companies began to set up and soon after, the roof collapsed in the centre. A high steel fence had been erected around the structure, after a partial facade collapse the previous April, and TFS personnel had been warned not to attempt an interior attack until repairs were made. While Station 325 crews and P314 laid big lines, A325 set up on Yonge St. using their master stream to protect a 3-storey brick HMV store, while A312 set up in a laneway north of the Gould St. facade with T333 just to the east of their position. A315 augmented the Yonge St. crews with T331 setting up soon after. By this time the entire roof and most of the north wall had fallen and crews were getting the upper hand. About 90 minutes into the battle, a mayday was heard from a Captain working on the roof of the HMV store. He and a firefighter, working in zero visibility, had slipped off, into the fire building. Two other TFS members nearby realized where he was, and dropped a hose down to him, pinpointing his position. Master streams were used to keep the flames at bay while RIT teams set up for the rescue. An additional mayday was sent in for the other fallen member, prompting the sixth alarm. It took more than 30 minutes to successfully extricate the pair, who were checked out in hospital and released. Extinguishing the inferno took the rest of the morning and crews were on scene for more than a week putting out hotspots. The building was erected in 1888 with first floor stores and a hotel, and at one time was considered to be one of the more fashionable establishments in the city. When the facade collapse occurred in April 2010, offices occupied the upper stories while several stores and restaurants rented the ground floor. Arson has been established in this case, and the loss is $5 million. © GTMAA Trumpet.
