May 5, 2011 - 3rd Alarm - 545 St. Clements Ave.
May 5, 2011 - 2:08am - North Command - "C" Shift
Responding stations could see the glow as they sped toward this posh Forest Hill neighbourhood in response to numerous calls. They arrived to find the blaze consuming a 2-storey frame dwelling in the midst of construction with flames already spreading to a 2-storey stucco house to the east (exp.2) and severely threatening the 2-storey brick at exp.4. P135 took two lines to protect this building while R134 laid into exp.2. Meanwhile, several small propane tanks blew, intensifying the blaze. A135 set up on Caldow Road immediately west of exp.4, to use their ladder pipe to darken the heavy fire. P131 and incoming 2nd alarm crews laid additional big lines and set up water supplies while A131 set up on Castlefield Avenue to the south to protect a row of dwellings suffering a rain of embers as smoke engulfed them. As the initial outbreak persisted, A341 erected their new rig behind A135, putting the independent stabilizers to use on the sloping street. Relays were set up from distant hydrants and T114 was enabled next to A131 to observe spot fires and look over the scene. Once the inferno had been subdued, the roof had been burned off exp.2 and the building had received significant internal damage to all floors. The fire building was destroyed but damage to exp.4 was minimized due to its construction and the timely arrival of TFS crews. The OFM has been called in to investigate the cause, and damage is approximately $1 million. © GTMAA Trumpet
