January 9, 2012 - 5th Alarm - 97 Pelham Ave.
January 9, 2012 - 6:13am - West Command - "C" ➔ "A" Shift
First in crews arrived to heavy smoke coming from the first and second floors of a 4-storey storage facility, and commenced an interior attack. The fire had originated on the first floor and had spread up to the second, as the building's sprinkler system failed, flooding the first floor with six inches of water while not working on the upper floors. Initial crews had to contend with zero visibility, and a disorienting layout inside the building due to the many interior walls. As the fire spread up, the whole building became heavily involved and crews were ordered out to assume a defensive position. P424 crew, who were disoriented on an upper floor, made it to a window and were then extricated by A345's ladder. Firefighters continued to pour water on the stubborn blaze throughout the day and into the night, using several ladder pipes, two towers, and a multitude of hand lines and ground monitors.
